WEATHERFORD – SWOSU softball lost 3-1 to Arkansas Tech University in the final game of its series on Saturday. Despite the loss, the Bulldogs clinched the series victory with a two-game shutout victory over the Golden Suns in Friday's doubleheader.
It was their first series win against Tech while playing in the Great American Conference. SWOSU finished the year with 12 wins and 18 losses, and 8 wins and 9 losses in league play.
With no midweek schedule next week, SWOSU will return to play against Southern Nazarene on an earlier than usual weekend schedule to coincide with Easter weekend. The Bulldogs will travel to take on the Crimson Storm on Thursday and Friday.
In Saturday's game against Tech, they kept the offense at bay, but they did come out late.
SWOSU had one hit through the fifth inning, but got two more hits in the sixth inning to score their first run. Leading 3-0, Rebecca Fajardo led off the first inning with a double that hit the wall, followed by a single by Jaydyn Hook. Fajardo then scored off a sacrifice fly by Katie Bolin.
The Golden Suns scored three runs in the first two innings, which proved to be enough for the day. Leading 3-1, the bases were loaded in the 7th inning, but Courtney Hill held him with no runs.
Hill pitched five scoreless innings in relief for Blair Gentry, who started at No. 3, and kept SWOSU in the game. She pitched 12 scoreless innings over the weekend after a shutout win the day before.
In the home half of the seventh inning, SWOSU had the game-tying run with one out and runners on first base after Sharen Marshon and Skyla McPhillips both singled. From there they quietly went on, stranding both runners and ending the game.
The home Bulldogs finished with five hits. There were 8 people in the technical field.
