The committee includes members of both the UNC Board of Governors and BOG, UNC faculty and staff, alumni representatives, the current president of UNC Greensboro, and UNC System President Peter Hans. Everett is the only student representative on the committee.
“It’s important to us that we create spaces for young students to rise to positions of power and use that power to make real change as we decide where this university goes in the future.” said sophomore Playa Upreti.
The UNC System's Chancellor Search and Election Policy requires that the System President, BOT, and BOG be represented on the search committee. The president, in consultation with the BOT chair, is tasked with setting up a committee that includes people who understand the responsibilities of the prime minister and who are “broadly representative” of the interests of the UNC community.
Upreti said he wants a prime minister with integrity who avoids empty words and sticks to the initiatives he champions. She said she wanted students to have the opportunity to engage directly with the search committee for the commitment to student engagement to be real.
However, she said she was not hopeful about how much weight the committee was giving to student perspectives, and that it needed to improve as the process progressed, as absenteeism from committee members to forums was low.
“We're clear about the people and their ideas and regressive policies that we see as a threat to this institution,” Upreti said, “and in translating this information, some of that will be compromised.” I don't want that,” he said. Tell them directly. ”
next step
Over the coming weeks, faculty forums will be held, as well as additional student sessions that could continue into the fall. The President Search website is also a communication vehicle that includes a survey designed to assess the characteristics and values the university community is looking for in its next president.
Anita Brown Graham, UNC distinguished professor of public law and government and associate dean for strategic initiatives in the School of Government, serves as a liaison between the presidential search committee and campus stakeholders. Once the committee selects a research firm to assist in the process later this month, each company will use student feedback provided by Brown Graham to create a leadership profile. A committee and a research firm will nominate candidates starting in May, and screening and interviewing candidates will begin by June.
“[This forum] In my opinion, this is a clear strategic choice on the part of the administration to suppress student voices,” said UNC junior Raina Patel.
