WASHINGTON: Federal authorities said Wednesday that an Indian national awaiting deportation for entering the United States illegally has died at an Atlanta hospital.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said the Indian Consulate General in New York had been notified of the death of Jaspal Singh, 57, adding that his next of kin had also been notified.

Singh died on April 15th at an Atlanta hospital. ICE said an autopsy is currently being performed to determine the official cause of death.

Singh, an Indian citizen, first legally entered the United States on October 25, 1992. On January 21, 1998, an immigration judge ordered Singh's expulsion from the United States, and on an unknown date, Singh voluntarily returned to India.
On June 29, 2023, he was arrested by U.S. Customs and Border Protection Border Patrol agents while attempting to illegally re-enter the United States at the U.S.-Mexico border.

Border Patrol transferred Singh to Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) in Atlanta. He was detained at the Federal Processing Center in Atlanta, where his immigration proceedings continued.
If a non-citizen dies in custody, ERO is required to notify parliament, non-governmental organizations, and the media, and to post a news release with relevant details on a public website within two business days.
