HOUSTON – At KPRC 2, we are committed to getting results. That's exactly what's happening at the north side apartment complex we first reported on Monday.
Power outages continued for days and without hot water for weeks, forcing people to throw away food and, in some cases, much-needed medicine. Everything changed within a few days.
After we ran our original story, electricity and hot water were restored, but people's refrigerators were left empty. On Thursday, hundreds of boxes of food were delivered to the North Side from a Houston food bank.
“We're grateful,” said Geisha Milton, who lives in the Palms on Roaring Creek apartment complex. “It feels like we're starting all over again.”
Four days after the on-site interview, the feeling of despair turned to relief.
The lights are back on and the boiler is working, but that's not all.
KPRC 2 reached out to the Houston Food Bank and they didn't hesitate to drop off hundreds of boxes of food.
“It's the right thing to do, and it's the easy thing to do. I mean, I can spend an afternoon here and it doesn't cost me anything. I'm actively participating instead of just sitting and watching. I think we need more people to help,'' said student volunteer Michael Trencher.
The help was not only much needed, but also appreciated.
“That's the first step, so we appreciate it. And thank you for coming. Thank you for getting our story out there,” Milton said.
If you or someone you know needs help getting food, contact the Houston Food Bank at 535 Portwall Street by calling 713-223-3700.
Also, many of the people living there need simple items like furniture and toiletries, so if you can help with that, please contact Deven Clarke directly at Dclarke@kprc.com.
