MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – A near record number of Wisconsin residents are expected to travel this Memorial Day weekend, according to a report from AAA Wisconsin.
AAA Wisconsin projects more than 816,000 Wisconsinites will travel more than 50 miles, which would be the second-highest number on record. The highest number of travelers on record was in 2019, when more than 827,000 Wisconsinites traveled.
The number of travelers expected to go out this holiday weekend is 4% higher than last year. The majority of Wisconsinites will travel by car.
Nationwide, 38.4 million people are expected to travel by car over Memorial Day weekend, with AAA noting that the number of drivers nationwide is up 4% this year compared to last year.
“Road travel is appealing to many people because of its convenience and flexibility,” said Nick Jarmus, AAA's public affairs director, “but Memorial Day drivers heading out of state may have to pay more at the gas station.”
Gas prices in Wisconsin are currently below prices at the same time last year, but average prices nationwide are trending upward. This is most evident outside the Midwest.
AAA warned drivers planning to leave for their destinations on Thursday or Friday that they may have to leave early.
Jarmusch said wherever you go, be prepared for larger crowds.
“We encourage people to leave early, either by leaving a little earlier to avoid passenger peaks, or by arriving at the airport and allowing enough time for security checks,” Germs said. Ta.
The worst predicted travel times are from noon to 6pm on Thursday and from noon to 7pm on Friday.
