An Indian worker collapsed and died while performing maintenance on a major bridge in the Maldives capital, police said on Tuesday, the second workplace accident involving an Indian in the country since May.
Police identified the deceased as an Indian national but gave no further details.
According to news portal Sun.mv, the worker suffered dizziness and collapsed while carrying out repair work on the Sinamale Bridge on Monday night.
The man was taken to a private hospital in Hulhumale but was already dead by the time he arrived, police said, citing hospital sources.
The Sinamale Bridge connects Male city with Hulhule town, where Velana International Airport is located, and the outskirts of Hulhumale, and maintenance work on the bridge is being carried out by the China Communications Construction Company (CCCC), Sun.mv reported.
On May 3, a 30-year-old Indian worker died nearby after being injured in a dredging accident.
Police said at the time that a young Indian national was injured while on board a dredging vessel in Hulhumale Lagoon, but did not provide further information.
Local media reports said the incident was being further investigated by police and highlighted that proper safety standards were not being followed.
According to the Indian Embassy in the Maldives, there are about 27,000 Indian expatriates in the country, with a significant presence in the healthcare and education sectors, as well as unskilled Indian workers, most of whom work in the construction sector.
