Taste Atlas has released a much-debated list highlighting the top 10 best and worst rated Indian dishes this year. With only a limited number of dishes featured, the verdict has been divided and controversial among internet users.
In a recent list of best and worst rated Indian dishes released by travel guide Taste Atlas, drinks mango lassi and jaljeera were ranked number one respectively. In a social media post showing the visual rankings of both lists, chai masala, butter garlic naan, Amritsar kulcha and butter chicken consecutively featured in the top five, while dishes like gajak, South Indian thengai sadam, Odisha panta bhat and aloo baingan were ranked at the fifth lowest.
Conversely, dishes like Hyderabadi Biryani, Shahi Paneer, Chole Bhature, Tandoori Chicken and Korma made it into the top 10 highest rated dishes. On the other hand, milk-based Thandai, Kerala Achhappam, Mirchika Salan, Malpua and Upma made it into the top 10 lowest rated dishes. When the list of dishes was released, netizens expressed disappointment in the dishes that made it into the worst rated list and strongly opposed the ranking. While some questioned the veracity of the ranking, the majority felt that the list did not accurately represent the diversity of Indian cuisine.
Netizens also demanded that the list of featured dishes should be ranked by Indians, who should have a much better understanding of culinary diversity than “Westerners”. Humorous comments calling for the firing of those who rated dishes like Achhappam and Mirchi ka Salan as the lowest were some of the opinions most users resonated with. Most importantly, most Indians felt that the list failed to capture the regionality of each dish, given that taste is a matter of preference and subjectivity.
