Ukraine – Ukrainian security services say they have foiled a plot to overthrow the government that would have given Russia an advantage in its war against Ukraine. The plan was to start an uprising in Kiev on June 30, seize the parliament and remove the country’s leadership. Four people were involved, two of whom are in jail and could face up to 10 years in prison. Weapons, ammunition and digital evidence were found. The masterminds of the plot rented a large hall and recruited soldiers and armed guards. The news comes as Russia continues its advance and Ukraine is seeking more military support from the West.
United States – Donald Trump’s legal team is seeking to overturn his conviction and postpone his sentencing in the porn star hush money case. This comes after a Supreme Court ruling that granted Trump immunity for actions taken while in office. Trump was convicted in May on 34 counts of falsifying business records and is due to be sentenced on July 11. His legal team argues that the documents were signed while he was president and should be considered official acts. A former judge has ruled that Trump’s actions are unrelated to his duties as president. The Supreme Court ruling that Trump welcomed is in a separate case about his attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election.
COLOMBIA – Colombian marine biologist Diego Cardeñosa has loved sharks since he was a child and is very concerned about shark conservation. Around 35% of shark species are at risk of extinction, mainly due to overfishing. Around 100 million sharks are killed every year, many of them caught accidentally or intentionally for shark fin soup. Low shark reproduction rates exacerbate the decline of sharks, threatening marine ecosystems.
NEPAL – A Nepalese court has sentenced Ram Bahadur Banjong, known as “Buddha Boy,” to 10 years in prison for child sexual abuse. Banjong gained fame in 2005 when he meditated under a tree for nearly 10 months. He was also ordered to pay $3,750 (R69,187) to the victim. Banjong, now 33, was arrested near Kathmandu in January. His lawyers plan to appeal the sentence. Banjong was once considered a reincarnation of Buddha, despite unconfirmed claims that he survived without food, water or sleep while meditating.
