TORONTO: A new poll shows it’s not just Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s ruling Liberal party that is losing trust with Canadian voters – his partner the New Democratic Party (NDP) is also losing support.

The NDP, led by Indo-Canadian candidate Jagmeet Singh, would see its support drop from nearly 18 per cent to 17 per cent in the 2021 federal election if votes were held now, a survey by pollster Leger for the National Post found.

What is noteworthy is that 32% of those surveyed felt that their impression of the NDP and Singh had “worsened,” while 20% had a favorable view.
Worrying signs for the NDP were also evident in June’s Toronto-St. Paul federal by-election, where the NDP’s vote share fell from 17 per cent to 11 per cent, a devastating result for Trudeau’s party, losing a seat it had held since 1993.

Singh became leader of the NDP in October 2017. In the federal election before he became leader, the NDP won 44 seats in the House of Representatives and received about 20% of the vote. In 2021, both figures dropped significantly, with 25 NDP members elected and about 18% of the vote.
“I see this really as the public sending a message. The public is unhappy with Trudeau. They’re fed up with Trudeau, they’re unhappy with the Liberal party. And there’s a reason for that,” Singh said last week. But Trudeau’s minority government has survived with the support of the NDP after signing a Supply and Confidence Agreement in March 2022.
“We hear time and time again that things are getting worse, not better. The Liberal Party has had nine years to improve, but they haven’t,” Singh said, but did not say whether he would continue to support Trudeau.

Overall figures from the Ledger poll put the Conservatives at 41% support, well ahead of the Liberals on 27%. If an election were held now, the Conservatives would win 218 seats compared to the incumbents’ mere 67.
