Only eight nations remain in Euro 2024 and somehow England is still one of them.
Gareth Southgate’s Switzerland side struggled in the group stage, but in their round of 16 match against Slovakia they went into extra time with an equaliser from Harry Kane, who secured their victory. Now they face Switzerland in a match that will see them advance to the finals.
Jude Bellingham scored a brilliant goal in the 96th minute to keep England in the match and in the tournament, but his celebrations afterwards upset some people. “It was just an inside joke with close friends who were at the match. I have nothing but respect for the way the Slovak team played tonight,” he said, but UEFA have nevertheless opened an investigation into possible indecent conduct and Bellingham could face a suspension.
But Southgate still has a number of issues to sort out, including the doubtful availability of Kieran Trippier, defensive problems with the suspension of Marc Guehi and poor performances from the rest of his squad.

Foden defends Southgate and urges players to step up
England manager Phil Foden says his players must bear some responsibility for his team’s inconsistent performances at Euro 2024 and says he sympathises with manager Gareth Southgate, who has come under heavy criticism.
England struggled through their four matches in Germany but Jude Bellingham’s last-gasp bicycle kick and Harry Kane’s header in extra time against Slovakia saved the tournament.
Asked about the criticism Southgate has received, particularly over his team’s tendency to sit back and not press, the 24-year-old said he sympathised with the manager.
“The players have to take some of the responsibility,” Foden told British media. “Some leaders have to get together and find solutions to why things aren’t working.”
“The manager can only do so much. He puts the team into a system and tells them how to apply pressure. If that doesn’t work, then he has to solve it himself.”
Foden was named Premier League Player of the Season but has struggled to find form in Germany.
“He’s the best player in the Premier League and it’s a shame he didn’t come here and show it,” he said.
England will face Switzerland in the quarter-finals on Saturday.

Germany summons Turkish ambassador over right-wing ‘wolf’ goal celebration
The Turkish ambassador to Germany has been summoned over a Turkish soccer player’s “wolf salute” while celebrating a goal, the German foreign ministry said on Thursday, intensifying a diplomatic row amid reports that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is planning to visit Berlin this weekend.
UEFA has launched an investigation into Turkey’s centre-back Merih Demiral’s celebrations after he scored in a Europa League match on Tuesday night, which Germany condemned as racist because of his far-right links.
Turkey’s foreign ministry said it did not accept the UEFA investigation and that the German authorities’ treatment of Demiral “involved xenophobia”.
A Turkish diplomatic source said on Wednesday that the ministry had summoned the German ambassador to Ankara over the dispute.
German and Turkish media reported on Thursday that Erdogan was planning to visit Berlin for Saturday’s match between Turkey and the Netherlands.
Erdogan changed his plans to attend the match, Turkish media including NTV reported on Thursday.
He was due to attend the Organization of Turkic States (OTS) summit in Azerbaijan on Saturday.
The player’s gesture is associated with the Grey Wolves, the ultranationalist youth wing of Turkey’s Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), an ally of President Erdogan’s ruling Justice and Development Party.
The wolf salute is not banned in Germany.
But German Interior Minister Nancy Faser said at the X that “it is completely unacceptable to use the European Football Championship as a platform for racism.”

Trent Alexander-Arnold could dispel Gareth Southgate myths with England’s obvious change
The Trent Alexander-Arnold experiment is over. It’s time for the Trent Alexander-Arnold experiment. The Liverpool vice-captain seems a misunderstood and under-utilised talent at international level. His 123 minutes in midfield against Serbia and Denmark were such a momentous, scientific journey of discovery that it earned a status in itself. It was an experiment.
That it was deemed a failure was clear when Gareth Southgate picked Declan Rice’s successive partners against Slovakia – Coby Mainu for technique, Conor Gallagher for effort, Jude Bellingham for the overhead kick – and there was no scenario that called for Alexander-Arnold.
Not as a midfielder, anyway, but Alexander-Arnold was sorely needed as a revolutionary right-back, a consummate creator and a player capable of achieving extraordinary things.

England considering bold tactical changes ahead of Euro 2024 quarter-finals
England have been working with a back three in training ahead of their Euro 2024 quarter-final against Switzerland, potentially shifting Kyle Walker to the right of centre-back and using Bukayo Saka as a left wing-back, with manager Gareth Southgate now actively considering altering the formation, which could prove crucial during the tournament.
The coach had been frustrated by the lack of effectiveness of his initial system after struggling in the team’s first four games, but a confluence of factors in the run-up to the Switzerland game ultimately forced him to try something different.
The main reason was the need for defensive substitutions after Marc Guehi was suspended for picking up his second yellow card of the tournament in the 2-1 win over Slovakia.

Phil Foden reveals how England can solve their attacking woes at Euro 2024
The playmaker admitted he was frustrated by his team’s lack of performance but said it was not down to manager Gareth Southgate’s tactics, but rather the players themselves who must take responsibility. Foden claims his players feel held back by the nature of the game and the opposition’s defensive approach, but believes the team need to be more aggressive.
The 24-year-old admitted he would like to play at centre-back for England but denies there are any issues with his relationship with Jude Bellingham and believes his performance levels are improving.

Euro 2024 power rankings: assessing all eight nations ahead of the quarter-finals
Euro 2024 is on its way to the quarter-finals after an entertaining start to the knockout stages saw a further eight nations eliminated.
Spain, the only team to receive the highest score of nine points from their group stage, continued their good form with a 4-1 win over Georgia. Switzerland and Germany both advanced to the quarter-finals with 2-0 wins, but it was a much tougher challenge for France, England and Portugal, who needed a late own goal, a late equaliser/extra-time winner and a penalty shootout to advance respectively.
Here we rate the strength of each country competing in Euro 2024 ahead of the quarter-finals (this ranking will be revised after each match).

England updates and the latest Euro 2024 news
In football, great thinkers are not necessarily great winners. They can show others their ideas, but not their medals. That is why they attract not only followers but also detractors. Ralf Rangnick is the godfather of gegenpressing, but Jurgen Klopp borrowed his methods and won the Champions League, two league titles and numerous cups. In a managerial career spanning almost 40 years, Rangnick has won the Intertoto Cup, the German Cup, the German Second Division and the German Third Division.
Other managers have bigger trophy shelves but far less influence. Rangnick has earned a reputation instead as the Marcelo Bielsa of Central Europe: a pioneer, an evangelist, a man who changed the game but never won the decisive games. For Rangnick, Euro 2024 promised a belated reward, a historic achievement, an undeniable demonstration of superiority. Austria, he was beginning to realise, could win it.
