David Axelrod, a senior adviser to former President Barack Obama, has publicly called on President Joe Biden to recuse himself from the 2024 presidential race, citing concerns about his age and performance.
In his CNN op-ed, Axelrod stressed that Biden should step back from his obligations to his country, suggesting that not doing so could overshadow Biden’s accomplishments. Axelrod’s stance underscores the growing pressure inside the White House following Biden’s lackluster performance in the recent CNN presidential debate.

Axelrod’s comments added to existing doubts about Biden’s campaign, doubts that were not allayed by the president’s recent interview with ABC News, in which Axelrod criticized Biden’s behavior in the interview, describing it as a sign of “rebellious delusions,” and suggested a disconnect between Biden’s self-assessment and the public’s perception of him, CNN reported.
Concerns have been growing about Biden’s viability as a candidacy following what was described as a disastrous election loss in Atlanta, while the president himself has sought to draw attention to the differences between his policies and those of his predecessor, Donald Trump.
Biden criticized Trump’s ties to Project 2025, a controversial policy that reportedly seeks to restructure the federal government in a conservative direction. The Biden campaign characterized Project 2025 as a dangerous policy that threatens basic democratic principles such as reproductive rights and government checks and balances.
In response to Biden’s accusations, Trump distanced himself from Project 2025, saying he was unaware of the details of the project and that it does not reflect his official policy platform. According to CNN, the Trump campaign was keen to make it clear that Project 2025 is not supported and is not consistent with their official position.
Amid all this political maneuvering, Biden met with his campaign co-chairs to discuss his reelection efforts. Campaign co-chair Chris Coons, a Delaware senator, said the conversation was open and frank. Coons stressed his determination to dispel doubts about his candidacy among Democrats who are skeptical of Biden’s viability as the party’s nominee.
Biden aides, who spoke to ABC News following the success of his Wisconsin rally, are optimistic that engaging directly with voters through town halls and press conferences will improve his image. Coons noted that Biden’s aides have responded positively to some of his recent public comments, suggesting he is shifting his strategy to more unscripted interactions to reassure voters.
President Biden is scheduled to hold his first formal press conference since the debate at the conclusion of the NATO summit. The press conference is expected to be a forum for Biden to address pressing issues and reaffirm his leadership amid ongoing political challenges, CNN reported.
