Texans remain powerless: Many Texans are in their fourth day without power in the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl. Eleven people have died across Louisiana and Texas, and 1.3 million homes and businesses are still waiting for power to be restored. Public services are working to distribute food as logistics networks collapse, while residents run generators to keep their homes cool, putting them at risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. As climate change pushes temperatures above 90 degrees and humidity across much of Texas, the heat stroke death toll is expected to rise to 28, the highest since July 1, a record.
MONTREAL RAIN: Record rainfall in Montreal caused major disruptions on highways. Major roads were closed for hours due to flooding, and some drivers trying to drive through puddles were forced to abandon their vehicles after becoming stranded. About 2.5 inches of rain fell in a short period of time, more than double the record set on July 10, 1945. The region should brace for more rain as remnants of Hurricane Beryl are expected to arrive on Thursday.
Older than Machu Picchu: Archaeologists in Peru have discovered a 4,000-year-old temple and theater complex that predates the famous ruins of Machu Picchu by about 3,500 years, dating to an obscure period of history even before the mysterious Nazca Lines were carved. Archaeologists became aware of the site when a nearby town reported looting of artifacts of unknown origin.
Consumer Prices Fall: After three years of inflation that began at the peak of the pandemic, the Consumer Price Index reported a 0.1% decline from May, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics noted that the annual inflation rate, which reached 3.3% in May, will fall to 3%. This news is not really clear to consumers, but it is stoking hopes that the Federal Reserve may soon cut interest rates.
