Savannah Carriage Tours Offering
Savannah Horse-Drawn Carriage Tours hosted a group of city-sponsored summer campers, providing them with a unique opportunity to learn about horse care.
“One of the highlights of camp is sharing our love of horses with the next generation,” explains Cara Marshall, Owner and Operator of CToS. “During camp, campers ages 8-18, including those with special abilities, learn about the various aspects of horse care and grooming. They also get to see how much a horse eats each day and try out different sized horseshoes for themselves to see how big their horse’s hooves are.”
Marshall said campers especially enjoy meeting the animals, including Teddy the horse with the distinctive mustache and Sushi the growing barn cat. The interactive experience culminates with a scenic horse-drawn carriage tour through historic Savannah, giving campers a chance to see the city from a unique perspective.
“This project allows us to teach the next generation about the horse world and how to care for these adorable animals,” Marshall said. “Horses and humans have known each other and worked together for thousands of years. They are part of Savannah’s past and present, serving as valued members in our police department, on farms and in our thriving tourism industry.”
CToS’s education program will also be hosting a group of adults of various abilities this summer for a similar two-hour educational experience.
“This initiative is a testament to the support and collaboration that has been forged between Savannah Carriage Tours and the City of Savannah,” Marshall said. “We appreciate the city’s commitment to providing such an enriching experience for Savannah’s youth.”

David Brenneman named new executive director and CEO of Telfair Museum of Art
The Telfair Museums is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. David A. Brenneman as its new director and CEO, effective September 1, 2024. Brenneman brings extensive experience in museum leadership and a deep commitment to cultural stewardship to drive Telfair Museums’ continued growth and community engagement.
A former director of the Eskenazi Museum of Art at Indiana University, Brenneman oversaw a $30 million renovation of the museum’s iconic IM Pei Building and found ways to make the museum’s vast art collection of over 45,000 pieces more accessible and appealing to the Indiana University community and residents of Southern Indiana. Prior to assuming the role of director of the Eskenazi Museum of Art, Brenneman served in a variety of curatorial leadership roles at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta for 20 years, including as director of collections and exhibitions until his retirement in 2015.
Brenneman has forged partnerships with many important institutions. He served as project leader for Louvre Atlanta, a multi-year series of exhibitions that brought many of the Louvre’s treasures to the United States for the first time. In 2008, he was awarded France’s highest cultural honor, the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, for his work on the project. At Indiana University, he forged groundbreaking partnerships with the Tsinghua University Art Museum in Beijing, China, and the Speed Art Museum in Louisville, Kentucky.
Brenneman is passionate about building the art collection, developing engaging and important special exhibitions, and expanding the museum’s reach and impact as an educational institution. During her 30-year career, she has overseen a wide range of art acquisitions, from ancient to modern, including works by artists such as Claude Monet, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Elizabeth Catlett, Julie Mehretu, Anila Agha, and Samuel Levi Jones. She has organized and curated numerous special exhibitions, including highlights of China’s Terracotta Army, Salvador Dali, Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, and the costume collections of actor Glenn Close. At Indiana University, she helped establish a full-time position for outreach to kindergarten through 12th grade students and the first art therapist at an American university art museum.
Brenneman studied art history at Pennsylvania State University before going on to Brown University where she earned her MA and PhD. Early in her career, she worked at Harvard University’s Fogg Art Museum and was assistant curator at the Yale Center for British Art in New Haven.
“I am incredibly honored and excited to lead the Telfair Museum of Art, Georgia’s oldest art museum, into its next phase. The museum’s rich history, dedication to artistic excellence and impact in the community provide incredible opportunities. I look forward to working with the staff, board, patrons and the Savannah community to further enhance the Telfair’s reputation as a cornerstone of Georgia’s cultural life,” said Brenneman.
Telfair’s board selected Brenneman after an extensive search process following the retirement of former executive director and CEO Benjamin Simmons in March.
“We are thrilled to welcome David to the Telfair Museums of Art,” said Board Chair Josh Keller. David’s visionary leadership and proven track record make him the ideal leader to lead the Telfair Museums into the future.”
