The BJP-led NDA government at the Centre was unstable, and may not complete its term, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said on Friday as she met two key INDIA bloc leaders in Mumbai more than a month after the Lok Sabha poll results.
She criticised the Centre over the three new criminal laws that came into force on July 1 and also on the issue of declaration of June 25 as Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas’ by the NDA government, but clarified her party does not support the 1975-77 Emergency when rights of citizens were curtailed, political leaders were sent to jail and censorship on the media was imposed.
Banerjee, who heads the Trinamool Congress, separately met Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray and Nationalist Congress Party (SP) president Sharad Pawar during her first visit to Mumbai after the declaration of Lok Sabha poll results on June 4. PTI

The flood situation in Assam continued to be grim with seven deaths reported in the last 24 hours, even as the number of affected people decreased marginally to 12 lakh in 24 districts, an official bulletin said on Friday.
The Brahmaputra and three other major rivers are flowing above the danger level in different parts of the state, it said.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the overall situation was improving with waters receding in most parts. PTI

Chief Justice of India (CJI) D Y Chandrachud offered prayers at the Ram temple here on Friday.
According to the district administration, Chandrachud landed at the Ayodhya airport around 3 pm and was received by District Magistrate Nitish Kumar.
The CJI then visited the Hanumangarhi temple and the Ram temple.
Talking to PTI, Kumar said Chandrachud was in Ayodhya for nearly two-and-a-half hours. He left for Lucknow by helicopter from the Ramkatha Park helipad at 5:30 pm, the official added. PTI

Uttarakhand and Kerala have emerged as the top performer states in NITI Aayog’s SDG India Index 2023-24, which evaluates progress of states and union territories on social, economic and environmental parameters, while Bihar has been adjudged as the worst performer.
According to the NITI Aayog’s SDG India Index 2023-24, India’s overall Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) score increased to 71 in 2023-24, compared to 66 in 2020-21, supported by significant progress on eliminating poverty, providing decent work, economic growth, climate action and life on land.
Among states, Uttarakhand and Kerala have emerged as joint top performing states with a score of 79, followed by Tamil Nadu (78) and Goa (77). PTI

The Tamil Nadu government on Friday highlighted the various initiatives aimed at the welfare of the Adi Dravida community in the state, including housing schemes and measures meant for education.
The government has earmarked Rs 100 crore towards a scheme, named after Dr BR Ambedkar and launched last year to promote entrepreneurial ventures of the Adi Dravida community, and nearly 2,200 people have benefited from this so far, an official release here said.
The scheme involved providing 35 per cent subsidy of the total investment and another six per cent interest subsidy to entrepreneurs. PTI

A total of 21 people died across Bihar in lightning-related incidents in the last 24 hours, the Chief Minister’s Office said on Friday.
The maximum number of six fatalities were reported from Madhubani, followed by four in Aurangabad, two from Patna, and one each from Rohtas, Bhojpur, Kaimur, Saran, Jehanabad, Gopalganj, Supaul, Lakhisarai and Madhepura districts, the CMO said in a statement.

The Patna High Court on Friday granted the CBI the custody of 13 people arrested by the Bihar police in connection with NEET-UG paper leak case.
The central probe agency will now be able to question these accused in custody and also confront them with kingpin Rockey alias Rakesh Ranjan who was arrested on Thursday.
The agency had sought the custody of the 13 individuals, arrested by the state police, who were subsequently sent to judicial custody following a brief period of police remand. The CBI plea was turned down by the Exclusive Magistrate, CBI, Patna on July 2 on the grounds that the statutory period seeking police custody within the first 15 days since the arrest had elapsed. Parents should be kept informed about live-in couples aged 18-21, says Uttarakhand’s UCC panel
A panel framing rules for Uttarakhand’s Uniform Civil Code is trying to ensure that data provided by live-in couples remains protected but feels that information about those aged between 18 and 21 should be given to their parents, the committee’s chief said Friday.
The UCC, passed by the Uttarakhand Assembly in February, makes registration of live-in relationships and marriages mandatory.
On Friday, the report of an expert committee on UCC was uploaded on the website http://www.ucc.uk.gov.in. Chairman of the UCC’s rules-making and implementation committee, Shatrughna Singh, said it could not be made public earlier because the model code of conduct was in force. PTI

The European Union said Friday that blue checkmarks from Elon Musk’s X are deceptive and that the online platform falls short on transparency and accountability requirements, the first charges against a tech company since the bloc’s new social media regulations took effect.
The European Commission outlined the preliminary findings from its investigation into X, formerly known as Twitter, under the 27-nation bloc’s Digital Services Act.
The rulebook, also known as the DSA, is a sweeping set of regulations that requires platforms to take more responsibility for protecting users and cleaning up their sites, under threat of hefty fines.
Regulators took aim at X’s blue checks, saying they constitute “dark patterns” that are not in line with industry best practice and can be used by malicious actors to deceive users. PTI
