Two witnesses claimed to have seen a gunman during the attack at a Donald Trump campaign rally in Pennsylvania, with one recalling seeing him move from rooftop to rooftop, apparently looking for the perfect spot to shoot the former US president.
The FBI identified the gunman on Sunday as Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania. Crooks was armed with an AR-style rifle and was shot and killed by a Secret Service agent. The FBI said Crooks fired multiple shots at the stage from an elevated position outside the rally.

That a gunman got close enough to Trump to open fire and wound him is seen as a major failure by the security agencies tasked with protecting him ahead of the election.
US media said the gunman was on a rooftop about “200 to 250 yards” from where the former US president was addressing supporters.
According to an attendee named Ben Mather, he was along the fence and “saw the man moving from roof to roof,” CBS News reported.
Macer also said the shooter told officers he was on a rooftop about “200 to 250 yards” from where Trump was addressing supporters.
“As I turned around to go back to where I came from, gunfire started and then it was chaos and we all ran and that was it,” he said.
Another witness along the fence, Butler resident Ryan Knight, also said he saw the suspected shooter on the roof of the American Glass Research building, according to the report.
“I walked over and stood along the fence where Trump was about 20 minutes before the shooting happened, and I was right next to the AGR building where the shooter was,” Knight said.
“I was sitting there and a guy said, ‘Oh, he’s got a gun,’ and I looked up and there was a guy on the roof of a building with a blanket over him, pointing an M16 at the president. He started firing. I heard four or five gunshots. I threw the guy I was with to the ground. I jumped to the ground and looked up and saw his head split open by a Secret Service bullet,” he said.
The Secret Service confirmed that one attendee was killed and two were seriously injured in the shooting.
“All the police came rushing in and shoved us out, took my name and the witness statement, [and] Here’s my cell phone number to discuss what happened. [weren’t many] “There are witnesses,” Knight said.
“My biggest question is, why wasn’t the Secret Service on the AGR? That’s a great place to snipe the president. Why were they overlooked?” Knight asked.
Macer reiterated that while he did not have a clear view of the suspect, he saw him moving from building to building.
