Officials have reported that around 51% of applications received under the PM CARES for Children scheme for COVID orphans have been rejected. Launched on May 29, 2021, during the peak of COVID-19 infections in India, the scheme aims to support children who have lost their parents, legal guardians, adoptive parents or surviving parents due to the pandemic between March 11, 2020 and May 5, 2023. A total of 9,331 applications have been submitted under the initiative from 613 districts of 33 states and union territories (UTs), according to official statistics.
