July 29th: Will Scott end up on one of these four teams?
Marlins closer Tanner Scott is seeing a hot market ahead of the trade deadline, a source said. Mark Feinsand of MLB.com “Just about every contender” is pursuing the left-hander to some degree, but The Athletic’s Jim Bowden believes Scott will end up with one of four teams: the Yankees, Orioles, Red Sox or Royals.
Bowden said those four teams were leading the race to acquire Scott as of Monday afternoon.
A number of relief pitchers have already been acquired in trades for healthy prospects, including Carlos Estevez (Angels to Phillies), Jason Adam (Rays to Padres) and Hunter Harvey (Nationals to Royals), but Scott is expected to fetch the biggest return on the relief pitching market, assuming Athletics closer Mason Miller remains injured and stays put.
The Red Sox acquired James Paxton in a trade with the Dodgers to add depth to their starting rotation, but they may need more flashy pitching to overcome their recent slump. Boston has the worst ERA in MLB (6.72) since the All-Star break, and their bullpen has an 8.05 ERA and is 2-7 over that span.
July 27: Red Sox acquire Jansen from the Blue Jays
The Red Sox acquired catcher Danny Jansen from the Blue Jays on Saturday in exchange for infielders Cutter Coffey and Edinson Paulino and minor league right-hander Gilberto Bautista. Jansen has been limited by injuries the past few seasons but has a strong offense, hitting 32 home runs in 158 games in 2022-2023. Along with Reese McGwire, he will add depth behind starter Connor Wong. Read the full story here >
July 26: Red Sox acquire Paxton from Dodgers
The Red Sox acquired James Paxton from the Dodgers. Paxton was designated as a designated player by Los Angeles on Monday.
Adding depth to their starting rotation was a priority for the Red Sox ahead of the trade deadline. Boston’s starting pitchers have the eighth-best ERA in the majors (3.74), but they have a 5.51 ERA in six games since the All-Star break, helping the team go 1-5 during that stretch.
Paxton will play for the Red Sox in 2022-23 and posted a 4.50 ERA with 101 strikeouts in 96 innings with Boston last season. The oft-injured lefty pitcher posted a questionable 4.43 ERA and 1.33 K/BB ratio in 89 1/3 innings before being designated for action with Los Angeles.
