The urgent challenges of climate change and food security have been added to a new list of Canada’s intelligence priorities, alongside longstanding concerns such as violent extremism and espionage.
The federal government emphasizes that releasing this list for the first time is a significant move towards increased transparency.
The priorities are updated every two years, guided by recommendations from the national security adviser and the intelligence community.
After the priorities are assessed and approved by the federal cabinet, key ministers provide guidance to federal agencies involved in intelligence production.
The priorities encompass global health security, food and water safety, biodiversity, as well as climate change and global sustainability.
Additionally, the new list addresses concerns such as foreign interference, harmful influence, cyber threats, infrastructure security, Arctic sovereignty, border integrity, and transnational organized crime.
