Tech mogul Elon Musk has revealed plans to build a massive supercomputer he's calling a “gigafactory of computing” to power his artificial intelligence startup, xAI, The Information reported on Saturday.
Musk reportedly aims to have the supercomputer, which will integrate 100,000 Nvidia chips, up and running by fall 2025. In a recent presentation to investors, he stressed his determination to ensure the project is completed on time.
The proposed supercomputer is expected to be “at least four times the size of the largest GPU clusters that exist today,” including the one Meta uses to train its AI models, Musk reportedly said.
Since the debut of ChatGPT, OpenAI's generative AI tool, in 2022, the AI field has seen fierce competition, with major companies such as Microsoft, Google, and Meta vying for supremacy alongside startups such as Anthropic and Stability AI.
Musk stands out as one of the few investors with the financial muscle to take on AI giants like OpenAI, Google and Meta.
xAI is developing Grok, a chatbot that can access real-time information from X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, which Musk also owns.
Musk co-founded OpenAI in 2015 but left in 2018, later expressing displeasure with the company's shift toward a for-profit business under CEO Sam Altman's leadership. In March, Musk filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging that it had strayed from its original non-profit mission of making AI research accessible to everyone.
OpenAI has dismissed Musk's lawsuit and advocacy of open source development as simply post-departure grievances from the company.
Meanwhile, Elon Musk, known for his unconventional and provocative comments, took things even further during an interview at the VivaTech event when the host jokingly suggested that some people thought he might be an alien, to which Musk replied with a straight face that he was, sparking both amusement and curiosity, India Today reported.
“Some people believe you're an alien,” the host said. Musk quickly and mischievously replied, “I'm an alien.” The exchange amused the host, who declared Musk's secret out. Musk added, “Yeah, I keep saying I'm an alien, but nobody believes me.” The playful yet cryptic statement had the audience in stitches, and Musk promised to share proof on social media.
