In the series, Llewellyn plays Jack, a 19-year-old self-described “hiding mother” who wins a scholarship to a local college where he meets 25-year-old Danny (Jon Pointing).
The two boys end up becoming best friends, despite coming from opposite ends of the masculinity spectrum.
Critics praised Big Boys for tackling difficult themes with a light touch and comedic relief, and praised Llewellyn's performance in the show.

Below is a summary of the reviewers' comments.
“It's warm and funny, but the melancholy atmosphere fades and fades as the episodes and series progress, but never completely disappears.”
“Big Boys also finds a real star in Llewellyn, who shone as the ever-insulting James in Derry Girls…Here he retains his out-of-place sweetness but finds a softer vocal range and a darker melancholy within it.”
“I watched all six episodes in one go, but I could have watched more. It's so entertaining, yet so warm, tender and moving. I was moved to tears many times.”

“There are lots of funny moments, but at its heart it's a story of friendship that you really hope works out.”
“One of the funniest, most tender, heartbreaking and happy comedies I've seen this year, and well worth a watch for everyone.”
“The show is entertaining but never mocking, and shows that listening to your friends is a virtue that even young men can practice.”
Season 1 of Big Boys is currently available to watch on Netflix, while season 2 is also available to stream on Channel 4.
