overview
This forecast update indicates that the food insecurity situation in the Central African Republic remains of concern, with around 2.5 million people (41% of the analyzed population) in IPC Phase 3 or above. This includes 508,000 in IPC Phase 4 (Emergency) and 2 million in IPC Phase 3 (Crisis). These people require urgent action to save lives, protect livelihoods and reduce food consumption disparities.
The districts of Mbom, Haut Mbom, Haute Kot, Mambere Kadei, Mombom, Nana Mambere and Ouham Pende have the highest rates of food insecurity, with more than 50% of the population in IPC Phase 3 or above. These are followed by Kemo (48%), Waka (45%), Vakaga and Lobaye (40%). A total of 11 districts are in Phase 4 and 59 in Phase 3.
The sub-districts classified as in Phase 4 are mainly Bambuti, Jema, Obo (Haut-Mbom district), Wada, Yalinga (Haut Kot district), Ouang'a (Mbom district), Nana Bakasa, Nana Bogila (Ouham district), Birao and Wada Djale (Vakaga district). The acutely food insecure people are mainly those displaced or affected by armed conflict within the country.
Those who are acutely food insecure are mainly displaced people and those affected by the activity of armed groups. People living in landlocked areas have difficulty accessing markets and selling local produce due to poor road infrastructure. Poor households in urban and peri-urban areas face particular challenges as they rely on markets for food access but have limited ability to do so due to low purchasing power, rising prices of basic food items and worsening livelihoods.
