The Okotoks Food Bank will be receiving some extra help later this month thanks to a game of cornhole.
The second annual Cornhole Classic fundraiser will be held Saturday, June 29th to raise funds for the food bank.
The idea for the fundraiser began when Shane Evong and Trevor Wheaton went out for drinks last year and decided they should give back to the local community.
“At the time, I knew food banks were struggling, so I thought it would be fun to take my love of cornhole that I had been doing at camp and turn it into a charity event,” Evong explains. “So I came up with the idea to have a cornhole tournament over Canada Day weekend to support our local food bank, and that's how it all started.”
There will also be a food donation barrel on site, but they're mainly hoping to raise money for food banks.
“All the money we raise will go to the Okotoks Food Bank, so we have sponsorship opportunities available and we also have an entry fee of $40 per team. We covered the cost of the boards last year so we're hoping to have more money to give to the food bank,” Evong said.
Proceeds from food and drink sales will also be donated to the food bank.
About 40 cornhole teams have already registered, but they hope to have 60 teams participate in this year's fundraiser.
“It doesn't matter if you're a beginner, have never played before or are a veteran. The way we've designed it, there are two groups: those who are more competitive and those who are more recreational, so everyone can have fun.”
Despite the desire for everyone to have as much fun as possible throughout the day and raise money for the food bank, there will be a small prize awarded to the winning team.
The fundraiser, which will be held at Ethel Tucker Park next to the library, will feature food trucks, games for kids, cornhole, a beer tent and more.
Last year, they were able to raise $3,500 for the food bank.
The fundraiser will run from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and there is still time to register teams.
