BOSTON — Massachusetts General Hospital's Brigham said two staff members allegedly allowed unauthorized individuals to access personal records, potentially compromising the personal information of some patients.
On April 4, the hospital announced that it had learned of an incident in which personal information, including patients' names, addresses, medical record numbers, dates of birth, email addresses, phone numbers, and health insurance card numbers, may have been leaked.
The hospital's investigation found that between Feb. 26, 2023 and April 2, 2024, two staff members allowed unauthorized individuals to perform some of their duties and potentially view some of patients' personal information.

The hospital said it had fired two employees.
MGB said no bank account information was compromised and that it was offering 24 months of free credit monitoring and other services to individuals whose information was exposed.
“Protecting patient privacy and security is a top priority for MGB. MGB has taken several steps to prevent this type of incident from occurring in the future. Upon discovery of the incident, MGB immediately terminated the employee involved,” Massachusetts General Hospital Brigham said in a statement. “In addition, MGB continues to monitor and improve the safeguards we have in place to protect patient information, including employee training and enhanced processes for the organization's security alert system.”
A release issued by Massachusetts General Brigham Health Plan detailed a similar situation, but backdated to July 31, 2023. Following that investigation, one employee was also fired.
