Kellanova News Story: Kellanova Employee Mental Health Learning Resources
From Nader Salah, Vice President of Global Total Rewards
Keranova recognizes Mental Health Awareness Month every May, highlighting our commitment to prioritizing the health of our employees by providing education and resources to support mental health. It also shows our solidarity with those who are suffering and our support for policies and initiatives that focus on mental health care and support.
Earlier this year, Keranova introduced Made Academy 2.0, an addition to its e-learning resources that will go live in 2023 and added to its mental health toolkit. Providing this mental health training program will enable employees to recognize signs of distress and provide appropriate services. Provide support and access resources as needed.
As vice president of Global Total Rewards, I recently spoke with Aaron Harvey, co-founder and executive director of the Made of Millions Foundation, the global mental health advocacy nonprofit that developed the Made Academy curriculum.
NS: Why did you establish the Foundation and the Made Academy curriculum?
AH: I helped start this foundation after suffering silently from undiagnosed OCD for over 20 years. Once I realized that, my mission became to advocate for and create access to mental health education and resources in the workplace through services like Made Academy.
NS: How is Made Academy 2.0 different from the original?
AH: Our first offering is a self-paced e-learning program that provides easy-to-understand content about a variety of mental health conditions, treatment options, and perspectives and experiences from experts and advocates. Version 2.0 is an add-on that looks at mental health through different perspectives and intersections. First-person storytelling provides easy-to-understand information about workplace and environmental triggers of mental health problems and the steps individuals and organizations should consider to alleviate them.
NS: What is the difference-making impact of this kind of mental health learning?
AH: For me, it surfaces in the private conversations that follow when people who have experienced the fear and stigma associated with mental illness open up about their personal situations. They suddenly feel seen. I know what it's like – and that's always the most important outcome.
NS: Why is it important to partner with a company like Kellanova?
A: It's very simple. Because information about mental health is not available in schools, the workplace becomes a conduit to reach an attractive audience. These partnerships provide employees with the opportunity to raise mental health awareness and are important for helping employees address their own mental health needs and help family, friends, and others facing hardship. information and insights. The number of employees already exceeds 100,000.
NS: Why is it important to recognize National Mental Health Awareness Month?
AH: This month is a central time for businesses and organizations to consider and reinforce that employee mental health is a priority. It is estimated that nearly 53 million Americans have some form of mental illness. About half of them do not receive treatment. This awareness month encourages important conversations about mental health disorders that can lead to self-diagnosis and self-awareness that may never occur in a demanding workplace.
