Chennai:
A popular YouTuber has landed in trouble for revealing the gender of his unborn child on social media after undergoing a gender determination test abroad. In a series of videos, Chennai-based Irfan revealed that he had travelled to Dubai with his wife to undergo the test.
The food vlogger, who has 4.29 million followers on YouTube, revealed the gender of her child in a video. He revealed what the doctor told him along with the video of the test.
The gender reveal video has been viewed nearly 2 million times, and the Dubai trip video blog has been viewed more than 1 million times.
Revealing the sex of a fetus is illegal in India and punishable under the PCPNDT Act (Preconception and Prenatal Diagnostic Techniques Act). This law aims to prevent sex-based abortions and ensure the safety and rights of unborn children. This law was enacted in 1994 to prevent female infertility and address low sex ratio in India.
The Tamil Nadu Health Department has issued a notice to him under the Act.
Irrfan also posted a video of the family event in which the gender of the fetus was revealed, the health ministry said in a statement.
“The Enforcement Officer has sent a notice to Mr. Irfan for legal action. Such actions may lead to a decline in the number of births of girls not only in Tamil Nadu but across the country,” the statement said. Stated.
The health department also wrote to the police cyber wing to remove the video.
The YouTuber deleted the video and said he would respond as soon as he received the notification.
The couple's announcement received many blessings, but it also sparked criticism. Some said it could inadvertently encourage the practice of traveling abroad to determine the sex of a baby. Some went further, arguing that it may have been a calculated move to increase subscribers, views and profits.
Over the years, strict measures against unlicensed ultrasound centers have significantly curbed this practice and significantly improved India's sex ratio. The sex ratio rose from 876 girls to every 1,000 boys in 2005 to 907 between 2018 and 2020, according to data presented in parliament by the federal health minister last year. States like Haryana, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu have been praised for their proactive steps. In particular, the sex ratio in Tamil Nadu has improved significantly, rising from 918 in 2015 to 942 in 2019.
