The City of Parksville has announced it will not allow any more food trucks to park at the popular Parksville Community Park this summer.
Currently, the city allows up to three food trucks to be set up next to the park's splash pad from May through September.
In April, the Parksville and District Chamber of Commerce submitted a request to city council to allow a fourth food truck to be located in the park.
This week, Parksville City Council denied the request, citing concerns that a fourth food truck could have a negative impact on nearby year-round brick-and-mortar businesses and that the council did not have enough time to consult with local businesses about opening a fourth food truck in the park before this summer.
He added that the city has recently invested “significant time and funding” in the park and wants to see “how people use the area organically” before adding another food truck.
“Council received feedback from local residents that adding another food truck operating daily at this location may make people feel uneasy about bringing their own treats and occupying seating, and that seating may be perceived as being reserved for the food truck's 'paying customers,'” the city said in a release Thursday.
The city says it will launch a survey in the fall to ask residents how they feel about the condition of Parksville Community Park and whether they have any suggestions for improvements for the city council.
