The WHO Academy Group of Friends was launched today on the sidelines of the 77th World Health Assembly. The event was co-hosted by founding members France, Indonesia, Japan, Qatar and Rwanda, represented by their Ministers or Deputy Ministers of Health.
In attendance from 30 Member States, WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus thanked the Founding Friends, saying: “As a key effort in the transformation of WHO that began in 2018, the WHO Academy will be a key asset to Member States and revolutionize the way WHO helps countries build capacity. With the support of the Friends, the WHO Academy will be able to advance lifelong learning in health as a global priority.”
With French support, the WHO Academy campus in Lyon will open at the end of 2024. Supporting health and care workers worldwide, the campus will provide training including a series of evidence-based courses available online worldwide, as well as face-to-face capacity-building programmes delivered in Lyon and in Member States.
The Friends Group provides political support to promote the Academy and advocate for investment in health workforce training. The Group's goal is to help the WHO Academy become a world leader in lifelong learning in health.
