At least 43 people across Canada have reported feeling sick after using branded tumblers distributed by British Columbia-based vodka and soda company NÜTRL, which have been recalled after being found to leak a chemical solution.
According to Health Canada, the stainless steel tumblers were distributed as promotional gifts with the purchase of any 12- or 15-pack of Nutril hard seltzer in liquor stores across the country between April 29 and May 17. In total, approximately 33,000 tumblers were distributed.
A recall notice released Friday by Health Canada said some of the tumblers may contain a chemical solution containing sulfuric and phosphoric acid between the inside walls of the cups.
“When the tumbler is filled with liquid, the solution may leak and cause serious injury,” the statement reads. “Interaction of the solution with the tumbler may also result in increased concentrations of iron, chromium and nickel.”
According to Health Canada, ingesting these substances can cause nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, diarrhea and a burning sensation on the lips, tongue, throat and stomach.
As of May 23, at least 43 people have reported symptoms including headache, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.
The cups were manufactured in China by Sunscope. In a statement on its website, NÜTRL said it had been informed that Sunscope had initiated a recall after a manufacturing defect.
NÜTRL said the chemical was cleaning fluid that was trapped in the walls of the tumbler.
Health Canada is urging anyone in possession of the tumbler to stop using it immediately. Consumers can get more information by calling 1-866-846-1778 or emailing nutrltumblerca@sedgwick.com.
