We are seeking nominations from Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander leaders interested in joining the new Aboriginal Health Governance Group in 2024. We encourage applicants with expertise across a variety of health fields to apply. Applications close on Friday 7 June 2024 at 11:59pm (AEST).

We will establish Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander partnerships through a new Aboriginal Health Governance Group.
The group will drive improvements under the National Closing the Gap Agreement (CTG). This includes health-related goals such as life expectancy (Goal 1), healthy birth weights (Goal 2) and suicide reduction (Goal 14).
The National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Plan 2021-2031 (Health Plan) is committed to establishing governance arrangements. This group assumes this governance role, overseeing the implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of the health plan. It will also oversee the implementation of priority reforms under the CTG.
About the Indigenous Health Governance Group
The group was designed in collaboration with Indigenous health sector leaders.
The plan will run until 2031, consistent with the life of the Health Plan and the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Workforce Strategic Framework and Implementation Plan 2021-2031 (the Workforce Plan).
This group will share decision-making regarding health plan implementation and areas for reform to improve health outcomes. Group members will finalize the terms of reference. We support groups to:
Share decision-making regarding the implementation of health plans and workforce plans within our jurisdiction Advise on the implementation of health plans and workforce plans outside of our jurisdiction Receive information on actions to incorporate CTG priority reforms within the Department Shared decision-making The Minister of Health, who advises us and the Australian Government, criticizes systemic racism in health priorities, decisions and progress to improve health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Advise on areas for reform. Advise and represent regional and local voices in health policy and services.
This group will be co-chaired by our Chief Justice and a member of the First Nation, and the group will gain consent at the first meeting. Members include representatives from major national organizations and skill-based members. Organization-based members include:
National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organizations National Health Leadership Forum Departmental Representatives (Executive Director and First Assistant Secretary, Indigenous Health);
Skills-based members are appointed for two-year terms and provide expertise across a wide range of roles and responsibilities. These areas include data, research, workforce, mental health, aged care, comprehensive primary health care, and independent Indigenous health professionals/experts.
Members of the group are expected to agree on a remuneration arrangement at their first meeting in mid-2024.
The group meets up to eight times a year for up to two hours. Co-chairs may direct members to attend additional briefings or out-of-session meetings. Members can choose to attend in person or virtually, with at least one fully in-person meeting held in Canberra each year.

We encourage Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander leaders interested in becoming a skills-based member of the group to apply.
The evaluation panel will consider the overarching strategy when making individual appointments. This will ensure that the overall composition of the group is culturally safe and diverse.

Ability to provide strategic insight into Indigenous leadership in mental health systems. This involves a combination of clinical and cultural concepts of mental health.
Aging and aging care
Ability to provide strategic insights into improvements in the aging and aged care sector for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health care providers and older adults.
Comprehensive primary health care
Ability to provide strategic insight into comprehensive primary health care system improvement, with a focus on continuity and coordination of holistic care.
Independent Indigenous Health Experts/Experts
Ability to provide strategic insight into:
Delivering health services and influencing cross-cutting approaches across all levels of government and health systems.
