Students make a difference

A group of Kelowna Secondary School students helped out at the Central Okanagan Food Bank this week.
Student leaders sold a variety of clothing at a makeshift thrift store during lunchtime and raised $1,000 for the food bank.
It's called “Thrifty Thursday” and it's a weekly event at KSS where students get involved in reducing waste while also raising money for charity.
“Thrifty Thursday prevents textile waste, raises funds for amazing Canadian charities and gives students a sustainable and convenient way to access clothing,” said Grade 12 student Julia Soleski.
She believes the program will make a “tangible difference” by finding new uses for the clothes sold rather than them becoming useless waste in landfills.
The students chose the Central Okanagan Food Bank as the first major donation from Thrifty Thursday.
According to KSS students and COFB staff, the food bank can turn a $1,000 donation into $3,000 worth of food.
“We are incredibly impressed with the incredible work the KSS students did on Thrifty Thursday,” said Rayanne Gurza, communications coordinator for the Central Okanagan Food Bank.
“Their generous donation to our organization is a true testament to their community spirit and we are honored to have been selected as the recipient of their donation.”
