A Virginia tech company has been fined thousands of dollars by the Department of Justice for job ads that solicited “white only” applicants.
In March 2023, recruiters for Arthur Grand Technologies, an Ashburn-based information technology services company, posted a job ad on the employment website Indeed for a business analyst on the company's sales and claims team.

After the post went viral on social media, the Department of Justice and the Department of Labor launched an investigation.
The company, meanwhile, denied approving the post and blamed it on a disgruntled employee at its Indian subsidiary.
A year later, the Department of Justice announced that an investigation had found that the company had discriminated against candidates based on their citizenship status and national origin, in violation of the Immigration and Nationality Act.
Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke of the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division called the company's actions “shameful.”
“It is shameful that in the 21st century, employers continue to use 'whites only' or 'U.S. born only' job ads to exclude otherwise qualified job applicants of color. I share the public's outrage at Arthur Grand's egregious discriminatory actions in excluding job applicants based on citizenship status, national origin, color and race,” Clark said in a statement.

“The Department of Justice, working with other government agencies, will continue to hold employers accountable when they violate our federal civil rights laws.”
The Department of Justice said in a press release that both it and the Department of Labor have reached separate agreements with Arthur Grand regarding the matter.
The company was ordered to pay a civil penalty of $7,500 and $31,000 in restitution to people who filed complaints with the Department of Labor.
Arthur Grand has also committed to providing training to all employees involved in recruiting, selecting candidates and following up on expressions of interest for vacant positions.
