MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) – After a jury returned a guilty verdict against former President Trump on May 30 and sentencing is scheduled for July 11, local officials are offering their opinions on the legal decision.
Here is what the lawmakers said:
It is unfortunate that we live in a time when a progressive district attorney in our justice system convicts a former president for allegedly paying prostitutes, while our local justice system releases violent criminals on low bail or no bail while waiting for a sweet plea deal. May God grant us the wisdom and strength to move past this ridiculous situation, despite what some have put our country in!
“The lawless conviction of President Donald Trump only reflects President Biden's desperation and the corrupt means he will use to steal this election. I am confident that justice will prevail and the American people will not reward left-wing wannabe dictators who abuse our justice system in November.
This is a sad day for our democracy. Today's conviction of President Donald Trump was engineered to distract from the 2024 election. There is no doubt that this process was partisan every step of the way. Our country should be concerned by the two-tiered, partisan judicial system that we all witnessed in New York.
Americans deserve a president who believes justice means safer communities and secure borders, not weaponize our justice system to distract from his opponent's failed record. This is a dark day for American democracy.
The historic conviction makes Trump the first U.S. president to be convicted of a felony. It is unclear how the sentence, which carries a maximum sentence of four years in prison, will affect Trump's chances of running for president.
