GOBankingRates spoke with Jessica Randhawa, head chef and recipe creator at The Forked Spoon, to learn more about the best foods you can buy on a budget. Here are her top 5 recommendations for cheap bulk food items:
Dried beans and lentils
Buying dried beans and lentils in bulk has many benefits for the frugal eater: Not only can they be stored for months without spoilage, but they're also a great source of protein, fiber, and essential nutrients.
What can you cook with these versatile ingredients? Randhawa recommends adding them to soups, stews, salads, and any other meals where a protein boost would be beneficial.

brown rice
Rice is often listed as a food to buy in bulk, but Randhawa advises budget-conscious shoppers to buy brown rice instead of white.
“This whole grain is packed with vitamins and minerals and can serve as the base for countless meals,” says Randhawa. “Buying brown rice in bulk ensures you always have a healthy, filling option that will last in your pantry for a long time.”
Oats
Oats should be on any thrifty person's shopping list for a few reasons: Randhawa said they're generally cheap and high in fiber, which helps keep you full for longer.
Like the dried beans, lentils, and rice already mentioned on this list, oats are versatile: you can make a comforting oatmeal for a nutritious breakfast, use them as an ingredient in muffins and other baked goods, and much more.

Canned tomatoes
Frugal people who have a choice between fresh and canned tomatoes should choose the canned variety, and not just because it will save them some extra money.
According to Randhawa, canned tomatoes are a pantry staple: they have a long shelf life and add tons of flavor and nutrients to meals. Speaking of meals, canned tomatoes are a versatile ingredient that can enhance a variety of dishes. If you need advice on where to add canned tomatoes, Randhawa says to try them in pasta sauces, soups, and stews.
Nuts and seeds
Nuts and seeds can be pricey, so they might not make it onto a frugal person's shopping list at first, but if you're willing to pay a little extra and buy in bulk now, it could save you money in the long run, Randhawa says.
“Nuts and seeds are rich in healthy fats, protein and essential nutrients,” says Randhawa. “If stored in a cool, dry place, they will last for months and can be used as a healthy snack or to supplement your diet.”
