background
The Ministry of Nutrition and Food Safety (NFS) publishes new guidelines on financing policies to promote healthy diets. The guidelines provide countries with recommendations on measures needed to improve the provision of available foods to promote healthy diets. These measures include implementing policies to discourage the consumption of foods that do not contribute to a healthy diet and policies to promote the consumption of foods that do contribute to a healthy diet.
Unhealthy diets are a major public health risk globally, leading to unhealthy weight gain and increased incidence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke and cancer. Governments have a leading role in reducing the burden of diet-related NCDs, addressing all forms of malnutrition and promoting healthy diets. Affordability of food and beverages is a key determinant of the food environment, and changes in price affect consumer demand for many foods and beverages. Fiscal measures, including both taxation and subsidies, have long been recognized as a viable policy option to promote healthy diets.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has developed these evidence-based guidelines to help member states promote healthy diets. Join us for a virtual launch event to share the evidence behind the guidelines and provide a multi-stakeholder call to action.
The WHO guidelines on financial policies to promote healthy diets will be published on 14 June 2024 at 1 pm CET.
