NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull has been named a 2024 IPRO Quality Award winner for reducing urinary and central venous catheter use and achieving six consecutive quarters without a central venous catheter-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI). This hospital-wide effort involved inpatient medical, surgical, and intensive care unit clinical teams. During daily interdisciplinary rounds, the team assessed each case in which a central venous or urinary catheter was used to see if alternatives could be used instead, and contributed to the prompt removal of these invasive devices as soon as they were no longer clinically necessary. This intervention enhanced team communication, improved collaboration, and reduced central venous and urinary catheter use, resulting in an overall reduction in central venous catheter-associated infections. Woodhull Hospital participates in the IPRO Hospital Quality Improvement Contract (HQIC), a federal program funded by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) that focuses on improving the quality of care provided to Medicare patients across the United States.
“NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull is honored to receive the IPRO Quality Award in recognition of our commitment to quality improvement and patient safety. This achievement is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our staff who have worked hard to implement effective infection prevention measures. We are proud of our success in reducing our rates of urinary and central venous catheter use, which reflects our ongoing efforts to provide the highest standards of quality care to our patients,” said Gregory Caliste, CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull.
“This honor recognizes the efforts of the many Woodhull employees who work every day dedicated to quality care and patient safety. We are committed to doing the best for our patients and the communities we serve,” said Dr. Ross MacDonald, chief medical officer for NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull.
“Recognizing providers who have achieved measurable improvements in quality outcomes is an important aspect of our work,” said IPRO CEO Ted Will, “It allows us to demonstrate the meaningful progress achieved through partnerships with provider organizations that implement evidence-based interventions into their processes.”
“We are proud to collaborate with nursing homes, hospitals, community-based providers, and other stakeholders on these important quality improvement efforts,” said Claire Bradley, M.D., IPRO's senior vice president and chief medical officer. “NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull and the other awardees embody the dedication of health care providers from all disciplines who have remained committed to providing the highest quality care despite challenges including the COVID-19 pandemic, staffing shortages, an aging workforce, and a growing number of patients with complex needs.”

This recognition highlights our organization's proactive approach to infection prevention and notable achievements in reducing the use of urinary and central venous catheters,” said Elizabeth Udeji, associate executive director of quality management at NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull.
“Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) continue to be a threat to patients in acute care settings. Effectively preventing and controlling HAIs requires a multidisciplinary team working together. Our team has proven that evidence-based interventions are effective in preventing healthcare-associated infections, promoting quality patient care, and reducing hospital costs,” said Dilcia Ortega, director of infection prevention at NYC Health + Hospitals/Woodhull.
The winners were recognized at IPRO's 40th Annual Meeting on June 11. The event also featured a keynote address on “How AI Can Transform Long-Term Care” by Dr. Timothy Hoff, professor of management, health systems and health policy at Northeastern University's D'Amore-McKim School of Business and School of Public Policy and Urban Affairs in Boston, Massachusetts, and a presentation on “Collaborating for Quality” by Kathleen Otte, administrator of the CMS New York Regional Office.
