The streets of Ottawa come alive with the tantalizing aromas of food trucks, and for many this is the ultimate mobile gourmet tour.
A fun atmosphere and delicious food awaits at Jimmy's Waffle World in Stittsville. It's hard to miss the red 1960s surfing-themed truck located on Hazeldean Road on the city's west end.
“We specialize in waffles and fried chicken. We do Brussels-style waffles and bubble waffles. We also sell ice cream. We have a variety of potato products, like poutine and fries, and we have sweet and savory,” says owner Jimmy Lafreniere. “We like to grow different things depending on the season, and all the flowers we grow can be used in our sweet waffles. We attract happy people, and that's what we want.”
First-time customers Lana and Arnold Abrera ordered poutine and the popular fried chicken waffle sandwich.
“I'll be back. This is the best food truck I've ever been to,” Lana said. “I like eating food in a different way, outside in the sun. Check out this sandwich in a waffle! This is my first time. It's so good.”
Arnold added that the freshly made lemongrass lemonade was “absolutely delicious and perfect.”
The City of Ottawa has issued licences to 70 food trucks, 12 food carts such as hot dog stands, and 16 mobile cafeterias.
Street food is a trendy food for many and is enjoyed by patrons.
“It's a great atmosphere,” says local enthusiast Nikki Clark, “a refreshing experience and it's great to support local businesses.”
Located in Bells Corners, Kichesippi Brewery offers two food trucks for foodies: Le's Fusion Kitchen, serving Asian-inspired dishes, and Ad Mare, for seafood lovers, where you can also enjoy the brewery's wide range of beers.
At Riggins Family Barbecue, known for its grilled and smoked meats, owner Pat Riggins said summer has been busy so far.
“Having a food truck is fun because you can do so many different things,” he says. “We have something called a brisket battle. We make a Montreal sandwich, a pastrami sandwich and a Texas sandwich and put them all out for people to try.”
Riggins Family Barbeque has adapted to provide grab-and-go family meals as well as catering, and its location at the RA Center benefits both establishments.
“They've been a great partner providing food service for all of our special events,” said Andrea Birchard, RA Center Engagement Manager. “They really do a great job supporting our community.”
“It has a little hometown feel,” Lafreniere said, “where the community wants to support you.”
With so many options, Ottawa's food trucks are a must-try this summer — the only question is where to start.
