To the Editor:
I attended the[May 15th]City Council meeting and I thought the City Council handled it poorly in terms of the appointment process that was carried out. It was clear to me that the City Council seemed very confused about how to proceed because they knew what was coming.
Councilman Manelis appears to have been able to choose who he would consider from a “list of candidates.” Was this done in accordance with city ordinances?
The decision by the council to recall Mr. Ocholi and then immediately re-elect him as councillor was an insult to everyone in King City who voted for the recall. And for Councillor Manelis to justify this by saying he should be re-elected to represent “marginalised communities” was, to me, a ridiculous statement. Remember, he, like the other councillors, was recalled for his stance on the Transit System Project/Fisher Road Extension, nothing more.
I also found it odd that some of the other “very qualified” candidates, who sat in the same seat, were not even mentioned by name during the discussion. Instead, they were told they expected to run in November. Ocholi should have been told that, instead of appointing him to a longer term than his predecessor.
