The Brock University Students’ Union (BUSU) has partnered with the Graduate Students’ Association (GSA) and Brock International to support students experiencing food insecurity.
Students currently taking summer classes can get free non-perishable food items at the Food First Pop-Up Pantry at the Brock International Center Global Commons on Wednesday, June 26. The event will run from 1 to 3 p.m., while supplies last.
There will be a limit of one bag per student, and students are asked to bring a reusable bag and block card to the event.
Carly Charlton, BUSU vice president for university affairs, says events like the pop-up pantry directly support students who are experiencing food insecurity.
“The rising cost of living and food has especially affected many students, resulting in a sharp increase in students needing food insecurity assistance,” she said. “Our hope is to alleviate some of that stress and give students the opportunity to focus on their studies and extracurricular activities, rather than worrying about where their next meal is coming from.”
Earlier this spring, BUSU invited students preparing to move out of their residence halls and off-campus housing to donate non-perishable food items for the pop-up pantry, and as a result of this highly successful pilot project, BUSU will continue to accept non-perishable food items such as cereal, pasta and canned goods through a collection box located outside the Student and Alumni Center office.
The Food First program is a partnership between BUSU, GSA, and Brock University. The program supports Brock University students who experience food insecurity throughout the year by providing grocery store gift cards and connections to community resources.
