With just a little help, any senior can become tech savvy.
This Friday, June 21, LinkNYC and the Queens Gigabit Center are teaming up to host the first of five “Senior Series” digital literacy workshops to help seniors become proficient with modern technology. The workshop will begin at 11 a.m. at the Allen Community Senior Citizens Center, located at 166-01 Linden Blvd. in Jamaica.
The two organizations have partnered with the New York City Office of Technology and Innovation (OTI), Boldyn Networks, and community partner Allen Community Senior Citizens Center to bring AARP's senior technology services to local seniors. The first session, titled “Smartphone Introduction,” will introduce seniors to the world of smartphone technology. Seniors will learn how to use features such as video calling and public transportation routes.
AARP reports that smartphone ownership among seniors will rise from 77% to 89% between 2019 and 2023. 71% of people over 50 would prefer to receive in-person help rather than teaching themselves how to use a device.
The Queens Gigabit Center at Allen Community Senior Citizens Center offers free high-speed Wi-Fi provided by LinkNYC, as well as access to laptops and tablets.
Upcoming sessions in the five-month series will include learning about social media, computer and iPad basics, streaming, smart TVs and more.
