Niagara Health is seeking Indigenous artists to apply for three commissions to create artworks to be displayed in outpatient mental health units in St. Catharines, Niagara Falls and Welland.
These artworks are designed to support patients seeking mental health care at our hospital, creating a welcoming and culturally safe environment where all patients feel understood and heard.
The winning artist will work closely with Niagara Health's Indigenous Health Services and Reconciliation team to create a work of art that represents the community we serve and the concept of “seeing with two eyes,” acknowledging traditional Indigenous healing practices and Western healing practices. The work will be displayed in our outpatient mental health waiting room.
The mural will be installed directly on the wall at Marotta Family Hospital in St. Catharines, while mobile displays will be installed at Niagara Falls Hospital and Welland Hospital.
“Art is a powerful healing medium and we believe these murals will make a real difference in the lives of people seeking mental health support,” said Charity Belland, Indigenous Health Services and Reconciliation Manager. “We look forward to seeing what talented Indigenous artists will bring to this project.”
Indigenous artists interested in the commission can apply on Niagara Health's website , with concept proposals due by 4pm on August 2. An optional virtual information session will be held on July 4 at 3pm to provide more information about the project and answer questions from potential applicants.
Virtual information session: July 4th from 3 to 3:30 p.m.
