Jonathan Behnke, chief information officer who oversees technology for San Diego, the eighth-largest city in the nation, outlined his role and his department's priorities in a recent interview with Government Technology, an Industry Insider – California sister publication.
Behnke served as CIO for the last 10 of his 15 years with City Hall, having previously worked in the private sector.
In a brief but comprehensive interview, Mike Driessen, publisher of Industry Insider and vice president of subscription services at parent company e.Republic, spoke with Behnke about the scope of his role, his background, how the city is leveraging managed services to enhance its internal IT operations, and more.
Behnke, a frequent speaker at industry forums and conferences, previously spoke in a separate interview with Industry Insider about how the CIO role has changed to become more aligned with the business and strategy of an organization, which in San Diego's case is a sprawling organization.
Behnke's department serves 13,000 technology users. The fast-growing city government of 1.4 million people has an annual IT budget of approximately $137 million. Behnke's department oversees and manages technology for a number of functions, including data centers, cloud, some utilities, call centers and web services.
Mr. Behnke is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin and Wisconsin Lutheran University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in business administration.
He will be one of the speakers at the San Diego Digital Government Summit* on June 27th.
*The Digital Government Summit is hosted by our sister publications, Government Technology and Industry Insider, both in California.
