High school students will learn how to insert an endotracheal tube using a video laryngoscope and a medical mannequin during Mayo Clinic Health Sciences' 2023 Career Immersion Program in Rochester.
ROCHESTER, Minn. — Thirty-one Minnesota high school students will attend a five-day training session at Mayo Clinic in Rochester next week, learning about careers in health sciences, from echocardiography to physician assistantship.
The Career Immersion Program, hosted by Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences, offers high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with experts in the most popular health science fields. Since the program began in 2017, more than 250 students from across Minnesota have visited Mayo Clinic to explore careers, many of which are in the medical field.
“Career immersion programs have been proven to open doors for many high school juniors and seniors with a strong interest in health science and medical careers,” says Martha Gracia Knuttinen, MD, associate dean for enrollment, diversity, equity and inclusion in Mayo Clinic's College of Health Sciences. “During their days at Mayo Clinic, students learn firsthand about the most in-demand medical careers with personalized instruction. They learn how to pursue pathways to those careers and understand the tools they need to be successful. This is a special opportunity, and the students who come here are motivated to make the most of it.”
The program begins with an orientation on the evening of Sunday, June 23, in downtown Rochester. The school provides lodging and meals. Students have a full schedule every day through Thursday. On Monday, students will have an exposure session on careers in histology, ophthalmic assistant, paramedic, physical therapy and echocardiography. Tuesday will focus on radiography, nuclear medicine, ultrasound, clinical neurophysiology, phlebotomy and respiratory therapy. Other career fields will also be covered, including nursing anesthesia, surgical first assistant, pharmacist, radiation therapist, MRI and social worker.
High school students participate in a phlebotomy training session during Mayo Clinic Health Sciences' 2023 Career Immersion Program in Rochester.
“One of the keys to the success of our Career Immersion Program is that the 18 health science careers students experience in our program provide hands-on experience with health science tools, such as life-saving emergency medical equipment, ultrasound machines for cardiac scans, specialized MRI diagnostics and physical therapy techniques,” said Mary Bunney, operations administrator for Mayo Clinic's College of Health Sciences.
Admission to the program is highly competitive, and participants come from a variety of backgrounds from across Minnesota.
