The Ontario Federation of Labour (OFL) is Canada's largest provincial labour federation, representing 54 unions and one million workers. OFL is seeking an Interim Director of Health, Safety and Environment (Leave) who will lead policy and action for the provincial organization addressing social and economic justice. The successful candidate will begin in July 2024 and report to the OFL President through OFL's Executive Director.
Qualified candidates must have:
Completed post-secondary education, labour education or equivalent work experience. 6-10 years of leadership experience in the field of occupational health and safety. Thorough understanding of labour issues related to the environment, including environmental racism and environmental activism initiatives. Understanding and knowledge of provincial issues related to health, safety and the environment, including knowledge of the principles of primary and secondary injury prevention and Ontario's Workers' Compensation system. Understanding of the role of trade unions in the labour movement, working class issues, workplace, community, national and international solidarity. Understanding of OFL structures, including provincial umbrella unions, provincial and territorial labour federations and local labour councils. Ability to work independently and with initiative. Excellent research, writing and presentation skills. Ability to conduct research on specific issues and prepare a range of materials, from government submissions to public education. Experience developing, leading and supervising issue-based campaigns. Ability to lead staff in a unionized work environment. Excellent organizational, communication and project management skills. Demonstrated ability to apply an equity and human rights perspective to all aspects of the work. Sound budgeting and financial management skills. Driver's license and car. Experience in staff or elected office or labor activism in a non-profit environment.

The successful candidate will oversee various areas related to OFL's Occupational Health, Safety and Environmental files including:
General Responsibilities:
Develop, lead and oversee the work of OFL on all issues related to health and safety, workers' compensation and the natural environment. Oversee the day-to-day operations and management of the department including budgets, work plans and strategic plans. Work collaboratively with other OFL departments, affiliated unions, the CLC Health, Safety and Environment Director, provincial and territorial labour federations, local labour councils, community partners such as the Worker Health and Safety Centre (WHSC), Ontario Occupational Health Clinics of Workers (OHCOW) and Worker Health, Safety and Legal Clinics. Support the work of OFL executives in developing and implementing OFL policy related to workplace health and safety, injured workers, environmental sustainability, climate change and a just transition for workers and communities affected by the transition to a low carbon economy. Oversee research and policy development in all areas related to workplace health and safety and the natural environment. For example, occupational health and safety, hazard prevention, standards and enforcement, workers compensation, return to work, duty to accommodate, mental health at work, disability rights at work, environmental sustainability, environmental protection, sustainable development, workplace pollution, national and international standards and enforcement, climate change and just transition. Organize state conferences, events and forums related to health and safety, environment and climate change. Support the activities of the OFL Health and Safety Committee, Article 21 Health and Safety Committee and OFL Workers Compensation Committee. Strengthen links between labour activists and disability activists, particularly injured worker communities and environmental activists, and indigenous communities affected by climate change. Represent OFL at all levels of government on health, safety and the environment. Research, develop and present proposals to government. Analyze and respond to government legislation, policies, regulations and recommendations. Advise on and participate in advocacy, lobbying and collaboration with state governments and other national and international agencies as appropriate. Promote, influence, advocate and monitor state, national and international standards and treaties on health, safety and the environment. Other duties as assigned.
This is a full-time, six-month contract with covered maternity leave and will be based out of the Labour Federation office in North York, Toronto. The successful candidate will be covered under a COPE 343 collective agreement and paid a competitive weekly wage, including COLA and benefits.
