Diamond Shrooms chocolate bars, cones and gummies, a microdosing product made in Santa Ana, have been linked to cases of severe illness, according to U.S. health officials.
California Department of Public Health officials said Friday that several people have been hospitalized in 16 states and at least one case of poisoning has occurred in California linked to mushroom products.
“These products have been associated with hospitalization and other serious side effects and put the public at risk,” said State Public Health Officer and Public Health Director Dr. Tomas Aragon. “California will not allow the distribution and sale of these dangerous products, and we will continue to work diligently with our local, state and federal partners to eliminate these products and raise awareness and educate the public.”
As of Monday, 26 people in 16 states were reported to be sick, with 10 hospitalized, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Of those sick, 25 have sought medical attention. Several patients have required intubation, mechanical ventilation and admission to intensive care units.
According to CDPH, symptoms may include seizures, loss of consciousness, confusion, drowsiness, agitation, abnormal heart rhythm, high or low blood pressure, nausea and vomiting.
The cause of the illness has not been identified. Authorities have advised people not to eat or sell the products, and said any previously purchased products should be discarded.
CDPH has issued a notice of violation to the owner of Diamond Shruumz and plans to issue a recall on Friday, the news release said. The company could face civil or criminal penalties.
