The Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre's (RVH) Hudson Regional Cancer Program (North Simcoe Muskoka) is bringing Jumbo Colon to Barrie to promote colon health and cancer prevention and screening.
The Colorectal Cancer Resource Action Network (CCRAN) inflatable jumbo colon will be on display near the lower level food court at Georgian Mall (509 Bayfield St., Barrie) from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday, June 24.
Jumbo Colon is an immersive, interactive walk-through replica of the human large intestine, where visitors can follow the guide of audio/visual screens to actually see and feel the different pathologies of the large intestine, including polyps, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, diverticulitis, haemorrhoids and the various stages of colon cancer.
“Colon cancer is largely preventable with proper screening, yet it remains one of the top three causes of cancer deaths in Canada. Prevention and early detection through stool samples and colonoscopy is far easier than treatment, such as surgery, chemotherapy or radiation therapy,” said Dr. Kyle Fortinsky, Gastroenterologist with RVH and Cancer Care Ontario and Simcoe Muskoka Regional Leader.
Tour JumboColon and learn more about colon health. If detected early, colon cancer can be cured in 9 out of 10 cases.
In Simcoe Muskoka, 34 per cent of eligible people are scheduled to be tested.
For information on how to get tested, call the Simcoe Muskoka Cancer Screening Hotline at 1-866-608-6910.
