A Vernon charity is looking for volunteers to help with mental health in the community.
The Vernon branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association is seeking volunteers. The branch says it is looking for people interested in helping with a mental health crisis.
“CMHA Vernon & District currently needs volunteers for crisis intervention and prevention services, including our 9-8-8 Suicide Crisis Helpline,” the chapter said in a press release.
The 9-8-8 Helpline is a free service offering support by phone and text. It was created to offer assistance to people who are thinking about suicide or who are worried about someone who might do so.
“Our team goes above and beyond,” says Jessica Voss, manager of crisis intervention and prevention at CMHA Vernon. “They provide confidential, non-judgmental support through empathy, active listening and compassionate risk assessment.”
The charity says suicide is the second leading cause of death for people aged 15 to 34. The Vernon branch is urging anyone who wants more information to visit their crisis line webpage.
CMHA launched the helpline about six months ago and, with help from volunteers in locations across the country, including Vernon, it has logged more than 200,000 interactions with Canadians.
