“I was definitely expecting it and looking forward to it,” Michelle Trosclair said.
Michelle Trosclair, a mother in Hartford, was one of several Connecticut parents hoping to get a new EBT payment this summer.
“It was actually supposed to arrive today, but it got postponed until August when school starts back up,” Trosclair said.
The Summer Food Benefit Program is new this year and its purpose is to help families with groceries while their children are out of school.
“Due to unforeseen delays, summer EBT payments will not be deposited on June 23rd. Payments are expected to arrive in early August. We apologize for any misunderstanding or confusion caused,” the Department of Social Services posted on Facebook.
“If it's not summer, how much of a summer program is it?” Trosclair added.
“Summer EBT is a new program that has not yet launched that DSS is preparing to launch this summer. It will be an additional food assistance program to serve families with children during the summer break,” said DSS Deputy Public Affairs Director Christine Stewart. “The launch of this new program will not affect other food assistance programs. When it launches this summer, families will be able to receive additional summer assistance benefits in addition to any other food assistance programs they already receive.”
“They haven't had access to EBT for a month so we feel like we need to step in,” said Ronald Campbell, assistant principal at Community First School.
Community First School is one of 10 locations that provides free breakfast and lunch to children under 18.
The meals will be provided by the Community Renewal Team, which expects to distribute about 35,000 meals over the summer.
“Not being able to meet your children's basic needs must be a huge stressor for you, and it has a negative impact on the family,” Campbell added.
Trosclair said she is grateful her son attends Community First School's Build a Better Community camp and is guaranteed meals during school holidays.
“I'm blessed, I'm fortunate to have had the opportunity to have a program like this,” Trosclair said.
