A campaign to benefit the Calgary Food Bank will be getting some support from the red and white team this weekend.
Ahead of Saturday's game between the Calgary Stampeders and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, players will take part in a challenge to stuff as many non-perishable food items into a bag as possible.
The team will be working to benefit the Purolator Tackle Hunger Campaign, an effort they have supported for several years.
“One of the most basic human needs is food, so this is a big issue that we have to continue to focus on,” defensive lineman James Vaughter said.
As part of the effort, the Stampeders are asking fans to donate non-perishable food items.
The Calgary Food Bank says there's high demand for its services across the city.
“We previously served 450 homes a day, but now we'll be serving roughly 700,” said CEO Melissa Fromm.
In addition to the food drive, fans can enjoy a variety of fun activities before, during and after the game.
Officials said the Gridiron Garden will be open from 3 to 5 p.m. and will feature a zoo, jumping castles and inflatable play equipment, music, a barbecue and up-close views of the Grey Cup.
The Superdogs will perform at halftime and fans can enjoy Fans on the Field events and Stamps House after the game.
In addition to donating non-perishable food items, fans can also make monetary donations online.
