Today, Health Minister Mark Holland announced the reappointment of two members to the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Board of Directors for three-year terms.
Debbie Delancey specializes in research and evaluation of northern health and wellness. Her current research interests include co-creating evaluation approaches that incorporate both Indigenous and Western knowledges, particularly in the context of Indigenous land-based programs. Delancey has served on numerous boards, including the Canadian Foundation for Healthcare Improvement, the Mental Health Commission of Canada, and the National Steering Committee for CIHR's Patient-Centered Research Strategy. She also serves on the boards of the Canadian Frailty Network, EcoTrust Canada, and AVENS: Seniors in Community. Dr. Shanti Johnson is Professor and Vice-Chancellor of Research and Innovation at the University of Windsor. She previously served as Dean of the Faculty of Public Health at the University of Alberta. Her community-engaged research program focuses on falls/injury prevention, aging in rural areas, and social isolation of immigrant and refugee older adults. She has served on national and international boards, including Eastern Kings Community Health Board, Annapolis Valley Health, Saskatchewan Health Research Foundation, National Council on Aging, and Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute. Dr. Johnson has also been awarded the Woman Professional of the Year Award by the Indo-Canadian Chamber of Commerce, received the Innovation Award from the Regina Chamber of Commerce and was named one of RBC’s Top 25 Canadian Immigrants.
Established in 2000, CIHR is an independent agency accountable to Parliament through the Minister of Health. CIHR works with partners and researchers to support new scientific knowledge and translate that knowledge into improved health, more effective health services and products, and a stronger Canadian health care system.
