Members of the Our Kids Health (OKH) team visited the Canadian Senate on June 11. The team was invited as special guests by Senator Sharon Burey and was recognized by the Senate. “Innovative solutions like our Our Kids Health network connect the dots and show the way to achieving equity and equality in our health care system,” said Burey. Dr. Lipudaman Minhas, a St. Michael's pediatrician and program lead for the OKH network, presented on the impact of OKH's innovative, multilingual, social media-based health promotion platform.
According to the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Trauma Quality Improvement Program, St. Michael's Hospital is ranked as one of the best performing hospitals in North America for trauma mortality. The ACS compared the trauma program to over 525 trauma centers across the United States and Canada. This quality improvement recognition came shortly after the program was certified as an ACS-certified Level 1 trauma center, the culmination of two years of intensive program-wide quality improvement efforts. Since then, the trauma program has seen significant improvements in rates of patient complications, including pulmonary embolism, unscheduled operating room visits and catheter-associated urinary tract infections, all of which contribute to improved patient outcomes.
The St. Joseph's Physician Education Awards recognized the physicians and teams at St. Joseph's Health Center.
Dr. Emily Belicoso received the Physician Ambassador Award. Dr. Shaishab Dutta, Dr. Yousef Etoum and Dr. Sarah Whynot received the Excellence in Clinical Education Award. The Department of Neurology and the Department of Family and Community Medicine received the Excellence in Education Program Award.
Unity Health colleagues were recognized at the Unity Health Education Awards.
Unity Health's student systems coordinator, Wallace Dakwa, received the Administrative Administration Award. St. Michael's cardiac catheterization lab received the Collaborative Education Team Award. St. Michael's respiratory therapist, Dejan Lukic, St. Joseph's registered nurse, Jennifer Comello, and St. Joseph's pediatrician, Dr. Mark Feldman, received the Outstanding Educator Award. St. Joseph's pharmacist, Gea Panic, St. Michael's clinical educator, Les Porter, and St. Michael's psychiatrist, Dr. Lu Gao, received the Early Career Educator Award.
Dr. Gianluigi Bizzrieri, a minimally invasive cardiac surgeon at St. Michael's Hospital, has been awarded the Scientific and Cultural Award – Business Excellence Award 2024 by the Italian Chamber of Commerce of Ontario.
Dr. Naheed Dosani, a palliative care physician at St. Michael's Hospital, has been appointed to the Board of Directors of the Canadian Medical Association. Dr. Dosani also received the 2024 Dr. S. Lawrence Librack Award for Palliative Care in the Community in recognition of his extensive experience and dedication to ensuring equitable access to health care for people living with structural vulnerabilities such as poverty and homelessness.
Dr. Eno Haisi, a scientist at St. Michael's Hospital's Keenan Biomedical Research Centre, has been appointed a Canada Research Fellow in Quantitative Ultrasound and Photoacoustic Imaging. Dr. Haisi, a scientist at the Keenan Biomedical Research Centre, is researching how advanced imaging innovations can be used to assess kidney quality prior to transplant into humans.
Aprile Royal, a registered nurse and manager of BARLO MS education programs, has been selected as a member of the Giants of Multiple Sclerosis for the class of 2024. The Giants of MS Awards, sponsored by NeurologyLive and the Consortium of Multiple Sclerosis Centers, recognizes pioneers who have made outstanding contributions to MS research. Royal received the award in the nursing category and attended the awards ceremony in Nashville in May. Congratulations!
